Kites press release
May 24, 2009
Kites press release at the Cannes Film Festival from Reuters and Reliance Media. The english version of the film will be shorter than the hindi version and contains no song segment.
In Cannes, the rough cut of the film's international version was shown to studios like Fox, Sony, Paramount, Disney, Warner, Universal and Lionsgate. The feedback was satisfactory. A source says, "The running time of the Hindi version is around two hours and 30 minutes. The English version has been shortened for the Western audience. The Hindi version has many song and dance sequences filmed on Hrithik.
However, the Western audience won't get to see most of those as the songs won't be included in it." A spokesperson of Reliance Big Pictures, which owns all the rights of Kites, confirms that the two versions have different running times and that song sequences are not a part of the international version.
Kabir Bedi talks Kites
May 24, 2009
Kabir Bedi who plays Kangana Raut's father in Kites talks about the film.
In Kites, he plays the owner of a Las Vegas casino. "He's a powerful person, flamboyant and almost loud in his choice of clothes. My portion has been entirely shot in Las Vegas. Kangna's my daughter in the film, with whom Hrithik falls in love. I'm a very uncool dad and have animosity towards my daughter's lover," states Kabir. But isn't Hrithik supposed to be in love with Barbara Mori in the film? "There are many shades to the story. He falls in love with one, and pretends to fall in love with the other," he explains.
Kabir's confident that Kites will make waves. "Kites is a powerful story, very different from run-of-the-mill Bollywood films," he says, adding, "Anurag is an extraordinary director. And it's always a special joy to work with Hrithik as I have known him since he was a little boy. I have seen him on the sets of Khun Bhari Maang. I even share screen space with Barbara, but the interaction is non-verbal."

Kites flies high in Cannes with Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori
May 17, 2009
Mumbai Mirror has a report on Kites promo in Cannes and DNA has this description of the promo reel that has been specially edited for the Cannes Festival. Paola has translated an interview with Barbara in Cannes where she talks about how she got the part in Kites, her experience shooting the film and of course Hrithik.
We saw a short 'sizzle reel' of Kites directed by Anurag Basu, starring Hrithik Roshan, Mexican actress Barbara Mori and Kangana Ranaut. The sizzler was scalding -- Hrithik Roshan looks hotter than ever and Barbara Mori looked a million bucks. Shot in the US, there were spectacular car chases -- with one car flying over and exploding six or seven other vehicles in a single sequence; chases in a hot air balloon -- Barbara Mori sends a rope down from the hot air balloon that Hrithik latches onto from a moving car; she leaps from one moving car onto a truck speeding alongside. Sigh! It's stuff we haven't seen in a long time with such brazen panache and reminds us of those Fearless Nadia stunts. Hrithik even speaks a smattering of Spanish as he makes goo-goo eyes. The reel promises paisa vasool; now we await the film.

Barbara's great
May 15, 2009
Hrithik talks about his Kites co-star Barbara Mori and his first experience in Cannes when he was 21.
"I wouldn't give any attention to the rumour. It doesn't matter as long as it is something to do with my film. Barbara is a great girl, a great co-star and friend. And I am very proud of my film. If tongues wag, I can't help it. It doesn't matter what people say. We haven't made any changes, there are the usual song and dances, but done in international style.
He visited Cannes first when he was 21 with his filmmaker grandfather J Om Prakash. "I was working as his assistant then. And I remember standing by the red carpet and watching the beautiful and glamorous world of showbiz walking down, little knowing that destiny would put me on the same spot," he said. The actor has a busy three days watching films, meeting Hollywood producers and global distributors for Kites. His international look in the film is a hot topic at Cannes.
So is Hrithik ready for Hollywood? "I will go wherever my work is appreciated and takes me. An actor always looks for a wider audience," he replied. A teaser of Kites is being shown on two digital screens beside the red carpet. This privilege, normally reserved for big budget Hollywood films, is a first for Bollywood.
Hrithik unveils the first look of Kites at Cannes
May 15, 2009
Hrithik and Rakesh Roshan as well as Barbara Mori are now at the Cannes Film Festival to promote and market Kites. Director Anurag Basu says if the film does well, it would throw global doors open for Indian cinema, read his interview with IANS.
In an attempt to woo the global audience, actor Hrithik Roshan unveiled the first look of his much hyped film 'Kites' amid fanfare at the Cannes Film Festival. The teaser trailer and some key art posters of the film were released before the global media by Hrithik in the presence of the cast and crew of the film at the festival's market.
"A film like 'Kites' has never been attempted in India before. This is our attempt to tap the mainstream international audience and we are hopeful that we will be able to meet this objective," producer Rakesh Roshan said in a press conference here.
Hrithik said that 'Kites' is a love story that transcends linguistic and cultural boundaries. "With an internationally renowned crew, crisp story telling we have attempted to create a film which we feel has a scope to reach wider world audience and set new benchmarks," the Bollywood actor said.
Strike wont affect us: Rakesh Roshan
May 13, 2009
Rakesh Roshan talks about the special Kites trailer to be screened at Cannes for international buyers
Rakesh Roshan and Big Pictures have been able to circumvent the current producers-multiplex deadlock to take Kites to the Cannes International Film Festival 2009. Defends Rakesh, "Why should the strike affect our visit? We are not breaking any of the conditions laid down. We're not screening our film publicly or for the media at Cannes. This is a screening only for potential buyers from the West."
Rakesh will be accompanied by his son Hrithik who stars in the film. Director Anurag Basu will also accompany them. Actress Barbara Mori, too, will be flying in from Mexico. The Kites unit will be in Cannes from May 14-17. They'll be staying at The Martinez.
Rakesh who is frantically working to complete all the formalities, says, "We'll be screening a specially-prepared trailer of Kites on May 15. On May 16 , we we will screen the film at Cannes for internantional buyers." So far, all of the filmmaker's productions have been very desi in their appeal. Kites is being taken to an international audience. And Cannes is the first stop, therefore very important.
Says Rakesh, "We hope to pitch Kites as our production house's first truly international product. Cannes is a very important venue for international cinema. That's why we've made sure to complete the film in time although Anurag Basu and I have been working against time to do so. But we've managed."

Kites synopsis
May 10, 2009
Cinando has the synopsis of Kites.
In the harsh terrain of the Mexican desert, a mortally wounded man is left for dead in the heat of the desert sun. This is J. Once a street smart, carefree young guy. Now, a wanted man. As death looms, the only thing that keeps him alive is the quest to find the love of his life, Natasha. A woman, betrothed to another man, surely destined for J.
