Hrithik's a 9.5 on ten
March 30, 2009
Choreographer Sandip Soparrkar talks about salsa dance in Kites and Flexy Studio has posted two clips of Hrithik and Kangana practicing their moves, watch them here and here.

"It was my dream to choreograph Hrithik and Madhuri Dixit. One of them came true. It took me half a second to teach Hrithik the basics of salsa. His knee was hurt before we shot, but he didn't let it hamper his work. It takes time for everybody to pick up salsa, but not Hrithik. If Jackie Chan, whom I have choreographed in The Myth, is an eight on ten, Hrithik is a nine-and-a-half on ten," gushes Sandip.

American choreographer Flexy Stu, who worked with Hrithik for a biscuit ad, was originally approached for Kites. The buzz is that producer Rakesh Roshan was unhappy with his work and replaced him with Sandip. "I believe so. I've choreographed one-and-a-half songs in Kites. One is a classroom sequence, and the other is a party number, half of which Flexy did. Flexy had brought in a bit of hip hop with salsa. Rakesh was kind enough to tell me in advance that someone had already choreographed part of the song. I was shown the shot version and asked not to be completely influenced by it. But it couldn't have been very different from that as it was a continuation of the same song," explains Sandip.

It's Sandip's eighth Bollywood venture and he holds the unique distinction of making Kangna dance. "Kangna's extremely dedicated and a keen dancer. She didn't go to her caravan even for a minute. Hrithik and Kangna complement each other. And she plays his student in Kites, so she didn't have to be a better dancer than Hrithik, which is a fact," states Sandip.

The sets recreated Las Vegas in India. And Sandip provided inputs for the costumes by Suneet Verma. "Hrithik wears jackets, trousers and waistcoats and Kangna wears lovely skirts. I told him that the dancing shoes should be high-heeled with back support," says Sandip.

There was no pressure from the director to Indianise salsa. "The film's all about my dance form, so I didn't have to do anything I hadn't done before. Anurag said, 'I want the kind of salsa that you do in your classroom'. The salsa in the film is very authentic," shares Sandip.

The look of Kites
March 30, 2009
Fashion designer Suneet Verma talks about the look of Kites.

He says the look of the film is very contemporary and realistic. "Even though some recent movies work on a similar formula, they try and make the hero and the lead cast look super and glam in every scene. I had to almost undo that thought process and get back to the drawing board. Hrithik and Barbara play ordinary middle-class characters. So, we didn't glamorise them for the sake of it. The credit goes to Hrithik and Anurag, who are intelligent enough to question everything like, say, can the characters afford an extra pair of shoes in the film? Wouldn't he just have a single jacket that's his favourite?" he informs.

Suneet, who's also dressed Kangna Ranaut and Barbara Mori in the film, says, "Barbara is a stunningly beautiful woman. It was very difficult to make her look plain in some scenes! Kangna is the coolest! She's honest to her craft and is easy to work with." And was it his idea to give Hrithik a stubble? "Hrithik is a perfectionist and so am I. We'd sit for hours trying to discuss his character and decided together that he should have a stubble. The way the story unfolds, he needed to," Suneet says.

Anurag Basu: I'm thankful to be allowed to direct Hrithik
March 25, 2009
Anurag Basu talks about working with Hrithik and Barbar Mori in Kites.

Kites has been in the news for a while now, what is the status of the film?
It's almost finished and the postproduction work is going on. We finished shooting last month and now we're looking forward to wrapping up. The actors' work is also almost done except for some dubbing.

What has it been like working with Rakesh Roshan, Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori?
First of all, I am very thankful to Rakesh Roshan for wanting me to direct Hrithik on this particular story. Hrithik is just a fabulous actor. He never gets tired and works till he gives his best. He gives a few shots and comes back to see if they are good. If he thinks they aren't, he gives the shot again. As for Barbara Mori, before signing her I knew that she was a good actress. She just blended with our cast and crew because she is so down-to-earth. This film has given me some of the best memories of my life. The amazing part is that we partied more than we shot for it. Obstacles cropped up such as problems with wages but at last, the film is complete. Full interview.

Sameer Patange, who tattooed Hrithik and Susanne, said, "They have got a six-point star tattoo with a red circle in the centre. The reason why they wanted the particular design was too personal for me to even ask them." It is learnt that the star couple decided during the shooting of Kites in New York that they would get the six-star tattoo done. Incidentally, Hrithik's father Rakesh Roshan too has a similar tattoo on his arm. Even Hrithik's co-star and close friend Barbara Mori has got a tattoo done on her forearm. Patange said, "Barbara along with her brother got a word tattooed in Hindi, which stands for brotherhood and is symbolic of sibling love."

Bhansali adjusts date for Hrithik
March 16, 2009
Shooting for Hrithik's next film with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali will start mid April.

For a director who doesn't take too kindly to interference, Sanjay Leela Bhansali certainly seems to have mellowed quite down a bit. The filmmaker was all set to start his next film, as yet untitled, from the second week of April. The film toplines Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. But the news is that Roshan requested him to push the shoot little ahead. And guess what? Bhansali came up with an idea which suited both the parties.

Roshan Jr wants to move on to his next project only once he's totally convinced and through with his home production, Kites, directed by Anurag Basu. The film also show cases Kangana Ranaut and Barbara Mori. So Bhansali and Roshan J have come to a conclusion that the shooting will start as per schedule — which is mid-next month. But Roshan will join the team only once he's free from his home production.

Meanwhile, the director will go ahead and can the scenes for which he doesn't require Roshan J. A source close to Roshan J also informs that the actor is excited about his film with Bhansali for two reasons — one, it's the first time he's making a movie with the Devdas director. Second, it's the third movie in which he's co-starring with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Anurag wraps up Kites
March 16, 2009
Director Anurag Basu has wrapped up the filming Kites.

"Today I wrapped up the shooting of Kites. Apart from one day of patchwork, the film is complete." Starring Hrithik Roshan, Kangana Ranaut and Barbara Mori, today's filming only has Hrithik completing his portions. The film will move into post production after this.

However, the big budget movie is giving Basu sleepless nights. "Prior to this the budget of my films was a small and in the range of Rs 4 - 5 crores and recovering that kind of money is relatively easy than what I have got into this time. Today, I have made a film, which is almost Rs 50 crores and that's giving me sleepless nights."

Kites has been extensively shot in Las Vegas, Mauritius and Mumbai. The film will be simultaneously released in English and Hindi. And for both Hrithik Roshan and Anurag Basu, along with the film's producer, Rakesh Roshan (Filmkraft Productions), there is a lot riding at stake. The movie will be released by Reliance BIG Pictures.

"If Kites takes me international, I'll be happy" - Hrithik Roshan
March 16, 2009
Hrithik talked about stardom and Barbara Mori.

Hrithik Roshan, just selected by Forbes among the half a dozen Bollywood actors who have a name in Hollywood, was delighted and surprised when he was recognized on the streets in the US while shooting for Kites. "That was a change. It makes me feel good to see our films are crossing borders. At a bank in the US when you're withdrawing money you are delighted to realize that the person on other end of the counter knows who you are. Or salesgirls at shops...they recognize you and go, 'Are you...? And when you tell them, they go, 'Wow!' ...yeah it feels good."

However, Hrithik is not courting international success with his first English-language film Kites. "I haven't set any goals for myself as such. I just want to keep evolving as an actor and a person. That's the only mission in my career. If Kites takes me international, I'll be happy."

Ironically, Hrithik Roshan's Kites co-star Barbara Mori came to Mumbai and went without being recognized. Says Hrithik, "We knew it would be safe to get her down because she had come to Mumbai last year and attended a fashion show with my wife Susanne, right there in front of the cameras. She was here for a week and went all over Mumbai without being recognized. Nobody bothered her. She walked the Fashion Street and no one bothered her. So we knew it was okay to get her over."

Why Hrithik Roshan missed Filmfare awards this year?
March 4, 2009
IndiaFM reports that Hrithik did not attend the Filmfare Awards due to his mother's illness.

There has been a bit of a health scare at the Roshan's residence when on the evening of the Filmfare awards Hrithik's mom fell ill. But now Pinky Roshan is well on the way to recovery. Informs Hrithik, "She's well now. Everything will be fine in time. But she's okay now."

Hrithik regrets missing out on getting his Filmfare award for Jodhaa Akbar. "It was a special film on many counts. It was my first historical and costume drama and I'm unlikely to do another of this for a long time. Jodhaa Akbar was radical departure from anything I've done so far. And I couldn't have asked for a better culmination after two years of grueling hard work."

Alas, God had other plans. On the evening of the awards mom Pinky Roshan fell ill. Says Rakesh Roshan, "We were all getting ready for the Filmfare awards, looking forward to Hrithik bringing home another trophy when my wife complained of uneasiness. We couldn't take a risk because she has had a heart scare earlier."

However, contrary to reports the first lady of the Roshan household didn't have to be rushed to a hospital. "It never came to that," says Rakesh Roshan. "We called the doctor home and Pinky's condition was under control after medication. Anything could've happened. That's why we decided to regretfully cancel our evening at the Filmfare awards. But I'm sure there will be many more occasions for Hrithik to get awards. And please pray that my entire family attends future Filmfare functions."
